Despegando hacia la lectura: FONÉTICA™

Despegando hacia la lectura: FONÉTICA™ is an authentic Spanish phonics program designed to support students’ biliteracy development as they learn to read in Spanish, while making cross-linguistic connections to related English literacy skills. The program offers a systematic and explicit approach to teaching early foundational skills in Spanish using literacy components in a cohesive unit: oral language development, phonological awareness, and phonics.

Decodable sentences and decodable books for students to practice their newly learned skills are included in the program. In addition, students will have opportunities to write and practice skills using the dictation method. Teachers will find cross-linguistic connection mini lessons for letters and sounds that have a positive transfer to English at the end of each unit.

Assessment
Assessment allows for the placement of students within the program, organizing them for learning, and monitoring their progress. Despegando hacia la lectura: FONÉTICA™ follows an explicit and systematic phonic progression that flows seamlessly into the Despegando hacia la lectura™ small group reading resource.

What and when are the students reading?
Exciting, engaging decodable books in authentic Spanish provide a foundation for beginning readers as they progress to independent reading in later primary grades. The books match the teaching sequence and support the students as they put what has been learned into practice. The seventy decodable books support the letter-sound correspondences and high-utility words taught throughout the program and allow students to use their decoding and word recognition skills to develop fluency and comprehension. The student texts are 100% decodable when the sequence of instruction has been followed.
